(More customer reviews)Any review of this product would have to be split into two parts. The first would have to analyze the quality of the filter contained in the cardboard frame and the second the cardboard frame containing the filter. With respect to the filter, it is quite good. It seems to pick up quite a bit of particulates that it is supposed to, as witnessed by the fact that after one month it comes out quite dirty. Hence 4-5 stars with respect to filter quality. With respect to the quality of the cardboard frame containing the filter, however, it is an altogether different story. The frame is built of cheap cardboard in a cheaply designed manner hence it is easy to bend out of shape quite easily. It may not be able to even get this thing to fit in properly unless your filter panel is a little bigger than the filter itself or if the filter holder itself involves even a slightly tight fit. Hence a perfectly good filter is ruined by a flimsy and poorly built cardboard filter. A little strengthening of the cardobard holder is all that is needed to remedy this problem (and would probably not add much to cost as could be done with only slight design modification).

(More customer reviews)This filter does not need to be replaced every 120 days.You can get by, by vacuuming it and reuse it a few times. Compared to the price of other filters, this filter is fairly inexpensive.Currently, Amazon has the `Buy 4, Get 1 Free' deal on this.With that noted, I have tried Daniel Sessoms' suggestion (found in TrueAir 04712 filter review) on how to make the "Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04381 Allergen Reducer" purifier more HEPA-like.What I did was add a carbon filter to the TrueAir 04712 Filter by purchasing the "Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-Filter" (an inexpensive carbon filter).From just one Honeywell 38002 carbon filter, I was able to cut up 12 pieces for the TrueAir 04712 filter (The cut up pieces of carbon filter factor to be only $0.65 a piece based on price I purchased at). Next, I just simply tape one piece of the cut up Honeywell 38002 carbon filter to the front side of the TrueAir 04712 filter with regular masking tape (taped up edges to filter).The carbon filter will now act as an extra layer of filter, to prevent dust & also clean up some odor.

Every 120 days (or whenever carbon filter turns `gray' due to dust accumulation), I would just remove & throw away the carbon filter, but keep the actual TrueAir 04712 filter (to reuse again).I vacuum the dust off the TrueAir 04712 filter, and tape a new piece of carbon filter to the same side of TrueAir 04712 filter as before.This is to prevent dust on the filter, in case my vacuum didn't pick them all up, from getting suck back into my room again.And when putting back the filter into the purifier, I would make sure to leave the carbon filter facing outward. After doing this carbon filter add-on to the filter, the Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04381 purifier does seem to work better.At least now, not only does it remove dust & pollen, it can also remove odors.

(More customer reviews)I received my item (though late, Thanks Amazon), and apparently all my research into an air cleaner has paid off. This little guy does exactly what it says and works like a charm.

Here's why I bought it. I wanted an air cleaner for a medium to small sized room where I keep my cat's litter box. Normally, it doesn't smell, but about the day it's time to change it, I can smell it. Now, I don't want to smell it ever, though I keep my kitty box schedule in tact. Anyway, this air cleaner is so quiet on Whisper Mode that I literally cannot hear it. I even put it in my roommate's bedroom, just to see if she realized it was in there, before moving it to its final destination. She had no clue.

The model has 3 speeds, but the Whisper Mode is fine for continuous daily use. Sure, you can turn it up, and you'll hear it's low whirrrrrr, but that's to be expected.

Another reason I bought it is that it IS a HEPA quality cleaner. But I don't have to buy replacement filters--ever. This one has a "permanent" filter, which I didn't even know existed. To clean it, it says about once every 6 months to just use your hose and brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner and suck it out. Really? That's awesome! Why don't ALL HEPA filters do this. That feels like such a waste. I'm not allergic to anything, but my purpose for this is to keep the area near my kitty box smelling like air, and not horrid ammonia. Cats are so gorgeous, but like newborn babies, they sure can produce some of the foulest smells! So: I am in love with this baby. Thanks Hamilton Beach!
